The Newest Guy in the Room

I didn't expect Day 1 to hit me the way it did. I opened the app thinking it was just a devotional. I closed it realizing God was already working on me before I even finished reading the first entry.
Let me set the scene. John, my co-host for those new here, invited me to join a 30-day devotional through a Bible study app with a group of men I had never met before. Of course, I said yes. I figured it would be a good experience. Undoubtedly, I'd learn something. And I'd get to be in proximity (even digitally) with God-fearing men. What I didn't plan on was what happened when everyone started sharing their reflections.
One by one, the responses started coming in. Right there in the group thread, scripture references, theological insights, reflections that were deep and layered and clearly born from years of walking with God. These guys knew things. Even through a screen, their words carried a quiet confidence that only comes from spending serious time in the Word.
And then there was me.
The Feeling Nobody Talks About
In the space of about ten minutes, I felt two completely opposite things at the same time, and I didn't know what to do with either of them.
On one hand, I was genuinely excited. Like, this is exactly what I've been looking for. God-fearing men. Real talk. A group that actually takes their faith seriously, even if it's happening through a phone screen. I wanted to scroll back through every response, read every reflection twice, and just soak it all in. There was something magnetic about being in a group thread where men weren't ashamed to go deep with God, where that was just... the whole point of being there. But underneath that excitement? A voice. Quiet at first, then louder.
You don't belong here.

I'm the newest Christian in the group. Not the newest guy. The newest Christian. And the difference felt enormous in that moment. Everyone else seemed to have a history with God that stretched back decades. I'm still learning the basics. I'm still figuring out how to be consistent in prayer. I'm still in the “wait, what book comes after that?” phase of my Bible journey.
Doubt showed up to my devotional, and so did God. Turns out, they were both trying to teach me something.
And right there in that group thread, scrolling through responses from men who clearly had it together spiritually, I felt the familiar sting of not being enough. Not knowing enough. Not having been saved long enough. Like somehow my faith was less valid because it was newer, smaller, still finding its footing.
Let's Talk About That Feeling, Because It's a Lie
I want to be real with you, because this is Faith Unfiltered Life and that's what we do here. We don't dress it up. That feeling of unworthiness? It's common. It's understandable. And it is absolutely not from God.
Here's what I know to be true:
1. God doesn't grade on a curve of how long you've been saved. The thief on the cross next to Jesus hadn't been following Him for years. He believed in his final moments, and Jesus told him, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43). Your timeline is not a measure of your worth to God.
2. You were added to that group on purpose. I don't believe in spiritual coincidences. If God allowed you to be in that thread, it wasn't by accident. He doesn't make mistakes. He put you in that group because He has something for you there, and maybe something for them through you, too.
3. New doesn't mean less. A new seedling isn't less of a plant than a tree that's been growing for 30 years. It's just at a different stage. Both are alive. Both are growing. Both are exactly what they're supposed to be for the season they're in.
4. The doubt you feel is not a stop sign. It's a growth edge. Discomfort in the right environments is almost always God stretching you. If you were too comfortable, nothing would change.
But Here's the Other Side of It
That excitement you felt? Hold onto that. That pull toward these men, toward their knowledge, toward the depth of their faith. That's not envy, that's hunger. And hunger is a gift.
There is something powerful about surrounding yourself with people who are further along in an area you want to grow in. Not to compare yourself to them, but to learn from them. To read how they handle scripture. To see how they pray, even in writing. To witness what consistency in faith actually looks like, typed out and shared without hesitation.
Iron sharpens iron.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” You cannot be sharpened by people who are exactly where you are. You need friction. You need challenge. You need people who will push you, not because they're better than you, but because they've walked roads you haven't walked yet and they can help light the way.
That 30-day devotional wasn't just a reading plan on an app. It was God handing you an invitation to a table He specifically set for you, surrounded by men who could speak into your life in ways you didn't even know you needed, right there in a group thread on your phone.
What I Took From Day 1
I opened that app as the newest Christian in the group. I couldn't change that. But what I could change was whether I let that fact diminish me, or whether I let it drive me.
I chose to stay. I chose to read every response carefully before typing my own. I chose to let my newness be honest in that thread rather than hidden behind a response that sounded more polished than I actually was. And somewhere in that choice, something shifted. Because when you stop pretending you have it all figured out, even in a group chat, you create space to actually receive what God has for you.
The men in that group didn't make me feel small. That was all me. And the moment I recognized that the voice telling me I didn't belong wasn't God's voice, I could finally hear what God was actually saying:
“I didn't bring you this far to leave you here. I put you in this room because I trust you with what you're about to receive.”
If you're reading this and you've ever felt like the newest, the least experienced, the most unqualified person in any spiritual space, this is for you. You're not behind. You're not a burden. You're not a fraud in a room full of the faithful.
You are exactly where God needs you to be, learning exactly what He needs you to learn, at exactly the right time.
Stay in the group.
A PRAYER FOR DAY 1
Lord, thank You for the groups You add us to,
even when we log on feeling unsure.
Quiet the voice of doubt and unworthiness.
Remind us that You don't call the equipped,
You equip the called.
Let our newness be a gift, not a shame.
And let us receive every lesson You've placed in that thread
with open hands and a willing heart.
Amen.
